Having a baby, watching the extra pounds that followed, and then indulging over the holidays made me determined to start the new year eating better. I was honestly surprised Jack didn’t arrive looking like a giant cheeseburger, since cheeseburgers were a frequent choice while I was pregnant. There’s nothing inherently wrong with that — comfort food is real — but I noticed it catching up with me and wanted some healthier inspiration.
Below I share some of my favorite food blogs that focus on whole foods and balanced eating. Some of these sites offer recipes for specific diets like paleo or gluten-free, while others emphasize vegetable-forward cooking. Each one provides fresh ideas if you’re looking to change up your meals this year.
I’m not preaching New Year’s resolutions; I just want to point you toward the websites I turn to when I need dinner and lunch ideas beyond living out the lyrics of Cheeseburger in Paradise. Jimmy Buffett probably didn’t consider that cheeseburgers don’t exactly create a beach-ready body, but we can still enjoy good food and make healthier choices too.
Here we go.
The Roasted Root
The Roasted Root brings approachable grain-free, paleo, gluten-free, and vegetarian recipes that are easy to work into everyday life. Julia’s food is flavorful and practical; many recipes can be prepped in advance and assembled when you’re ready to eat. A standout is her butternut squash and kale salad with an orange-sage dressing — filling, simple, and satisfying.
Vanilla and Bean
Traci at Vanilla and Bean writes with honesty about balance and food struggles, and her seasonal recipes help keep grocery costs reasonable. She includes treats alongside healthier dishes because occasional indulgence is part of a sustainable approach. One of my favorites is roasted cauliflower mac and cheese — the cauliflower helps offset the richer elements while still delivering comfort-food satisfaction.
Naturally Ella
Naturally Ella drew me in with beautiful photography and recipes that focus on delicious food without calorie counting. Erin’s approach is about enjoying hearty, flavorful meals while keeping a healthy lifestyle in mind. She often finds clever ways to incorporate vegetables into family-friendly dishes; our household regularly enjoys her zucchini bread pancakes.
Skinnytaste
Gina from Skinnytaste is known for “skinny-fying” recipes so they feel indulgent but are lighter than typical versions. Her recipes are approachable and convincing — perfect for sneaking healthier choices into gatherings. I’ve made a lighter buffalo chicken dip that’s always a hit at parties while staying mindful of portion and ingredients.
Inspiralized
Inspiralized popularized vegetable noodles — zoodles — and offers inventive ways to swap refined carbs for extra vegetables. Ali’s recipes and her spiralizing tool make it fun and easy to increase veggie intake without sacrificing texture or satisfaction. Her chicken zucchini noodle soup is a freezer-friendly, comforting option that’s especially welcome when you’re feeling under the weather.
A Couple Cooks
A Couple Cooks emphasizes unprocessed, whole-food cooking with bright flavors and bold vegetable use. Sonja and Alex focus on real food that’s accessible to home cooks. Their loaded huevos rancheros are packed with veggies and punchy flavors — a great example of how satisfying and hearty vegetable-forward meals can be.
Cookie + Kate
Cookie + Kate is a consistently inventive vegetarian blog with recipes that are both playful and reliable. Kate’s writing and photography make the site a pleasure to explore. I frequently make her gluten-free chocolate chip cookies — they’re quick, easy, and satisfy a sweet craving without derailing healthier eating goals.
The Lemon Bowl
Liz at The Lemon Bowl shares approachable recipes and personal stories about her own weight journey, which makes her site relatable. She’s great for smoothie and workout inspiration, and her toasted pine nut hummus is a recipe I return to again and again for snacks and simple meals.
Happy Hearted Kitchen
Happy Hearted Kitchen caught my eye with outstanding photography and comforting make-ahead options. I found a maple oat scone recipe that I like to freeze for quick breakfasts on busy mornings. The site is full of cozy, reliable recipes that hold up well for families on the go.
Oh She Glows
Oh She Glows focuses on plant-based whole foods and is a go-to when I feel like reconnecting with a vegetarian lifestyle. Angela’s recipes are bright, nourishing, and often adaptable to other diets. Her raw pad thai with a light peanut sauce is a summer staple that I use in other salads and even over grilled chicken.
After writing all this about healthy blogs and foods, it’s time for me to put the ideas into practice. I hope these websites inspire you to eat cleaner or simply explore new recipes this year. And if you’re not changing your diet, they still offer excellent food photography and mouthwatering ideas to enjoy when mealtime rolls around.
