Patriotic Star Cut-Out Cake Ideas for Fourth of July Celebrations

Sprinkles and Grins recently sent a box of Cake Mate decorating supplies that included their new Cake Mate Glitter Icings. These shimmering icings are eye-catching and versatile, perfect for adding sparkle and texture to festive desserts. I was excited to experiment with them and see how they elevate classic treats.

With the 4th of July in mind, I wanted to create something patriotic. Glitter evokes the sparkle of fireworks, so it felt natural to use glitter icing to bring that celebratory feeling to a dessert that’s easy to enjoy at a summer barbecue.

These star-shaped cakes are inspired by my love of cookie cutters. They’re bright, festive, and convenient—served individually as handheld treats or stacked for a dramatic presentation. No slicing needed, which makes them ideal for picnics and backyard gatherings.
I’m also excited to share that we have an upcoming collaboration with Sprinkles and Grins. This week we’ll post more desserts made with their products and share a few behind-the-scenes hints, so stay tuned.
If you want more holiday dessert ideas, check out my other 4th of July creations: 4th of July Snow Cone Cupcakes and Patriotic Sparkler Cake Pops, which were also made using Sprinkles & Grins products and are featured on their website.

Patriotic Star Cut-Out Cakes

Ingredients and supplies
  • 1 box Betty Crocker vanilla cake mix
  • Cake Mate red glitter icing
  • Cake Mate blue glitter icing
  • Cake Mate white bakery icing
  • Star-shaped cookie cutter
  • Cake Mate star sprinkles

Directions

  • Prepare the cake according to the instructions on the box and bake in a 13 x 8-inch sheet pan.
  • When the cake is fully cool, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and place it in the freezer for about 3 hours. Chilling makes clean cutting easier and helps the star shapes hold together.
  • Use the star-shaped cookie cutter to cut stars from the chilled cake.
  • Place each star on a piece of parchment paper to keep surfaces clean while decorating.
  • Fit a star decorating tip onto your Cake Mate glitter or bakery icing pouch.
  • Pipe icing along the edges or across the surface of each star with a steady hand to create a neat, star-shaped outline or design.
  • Finish by sprinkling Cake Mate star sprinkles over the wet icing for extra sparkle.
  • Serve the stars individually or stack them one, two, or three high for a festive display.

These star cut-out cakes make a colorful, easy-to-serve dessert for Independence Day celebrations—simple to prepare, fun to decorate, and great for sharing.
