Taco Tour in Puerto Vallarta with Vallarta Food Tours

I’ll admit I was nervous about eating at street taco stands before taking this tour. In the U.S., pop-up taco vendors can feel risky, but Puerto Vallarta’s stands are different — many have been family-run for decades. These establishments often trace back 30 years or more and are built on long-standing recipes passed down through generations.

We began with introductions to our guides, a short overview of the route, and then immediately jumped into tasting tacos. One surprising takeaway was how many taco styles exist. I had lumped everything together before, but the tour highlights different fillings, tortillas and preparations, each with its own character.

Another delight was the fresh churros. After tasting these, ordinary store-bought churros just don’t compare — they were crisp, warm and perfectly sweet. I’m already dreaming of going back to Puerto Vallarta to eat a full bag.

The taco tour moves through several neighborhoods, offering not just delicious bites but context: you learn about the families who run the stands, local history, and the techniques behind each taco. Guides are knowledgeable and passionate, making the experience as educational as it is tasty.

The tour also includes a mezcal tasting. Mezcal is potent and smoky; the guides will show you how to sip and appreciate its flavor rather than treating it like a shot. A few sips cleared my sinuses and gave me a lively boost — it’s an experience that complements the food very well.

This tour ranks among my favorite activities in Puerto Vallarta. It’s authentic, flavorful and well-paced. I’d happily do it again, and I’m also interested in trying their cocktail tour next time.

I’m grateful to the Puerto Vallarta Visitor Bureau and Vallarta Food Tours for hosting me — it was an evening of excellent food and great stories.
