This compote combines apples and pears with warm spices and a touch of dried fruit for depth of flavor. Cooked slowly over a gentle simmer, the fruit keeps some texture while releasing natural juices that create a saucy, spoonable topping. It’s an easy, make-ahead recipe that stores well in the refrigerator and adapts to many uses.

Ingredients

  • 8 Apples, any variety
  • 8 Pears, any variety
  • 1 cup Dried fruit, any type or mixture (raisins, dried cranberries, or mixed berries work well)
  • 1 Lemon, juiced with pulp and zest
  • 1/2 cup Dried cane juice or other sweetener of choice
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon Ground allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon Ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon Ground ginger
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 cup Water

Instructions

  1. Peel, core, and quarter all the fruit. Chop each quarter into bite-sized pieces and add them to a medium heavy-bottomed pot.
  2. Add the dried fruit, lemon (juice, pulp, and zest), sweetener, spices, salt, and water to the pot. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium heat.
  3. Once simmering, reduce the heat to low and maintain a gentle simmer. Cook on low for 1 hour, stirring occasionally so the fruit cooks evenly and the flavors meld.
  4. After one hour, remove the pot from heat and allow the compote to cool. Transfer to a clean container and refrigerate. The compote will keep for about one week to ten days when refrigerated.

Notes

Allow the compote to cool completely before storing it in the refrigerator. Cooling helps the flavors settle and improves shelf life.

Keep the heat low and maintain a gentle simmer while cooking. Slow cooking allows the fruit to soften without completely falling apart, preserving pleasant texture.

Experiment with different dried fruits to vary the flavor: raisins provide classic sweetness, dried cranberries add a tart contrast, and dried berries bring bright notes.

Uses: Spoon warm or cold over oatmeal, pancakes, waffles, yogurt, or ice cream. It also makes a comforting topping for pound cake or angel food cake. Serve a small bowl with whipped cream for a simple treat.
