On Saturday our CrossFit community hosted a Barbell for Boobs fundraiser to support Mammograms in Action. Our affiliate raised more than $1,000 to help cover diagnostic screenings and tests, including biopsies, for people who fall outside typical insurance coverage. The program exists to provide preventive screenings for those who otherwise would be denied or delayed access to important tests.
Many insurance plans restrict mammogram coverage by age or other criteria. I experienced that myself—my plan wouldn’t cover a mammogram. I was fortunate to have a proactive physician who ordered alternative testing and moved quickly. I saw my doctor on a Friday, had an ultrasound the following Monday, met with a surgeon on Thursday, and had surgery the next Friday. Within seven days I had clear answers and could finally breathe. Not everyone is that lucky. Programs like Mammograms in Action fill a critical gap by funding screening and diagnostic tests for people who would otherwise be left waiting for months or battling denials.
The workout we chose for the event was “Grace”: 30 clean-and-jerks performed from the ground to overhead. For a smaller affiliate like Northridge CrossFit, turnout was fantastic. Members from different classes—early morning and evening—came together to share stories, cheer one another on, and support a cause that affects so many. It was a beautiful morning in our new gym, and thanks to everyone who participated, more women now have access to necessary breast cancer screenings.

Community events like this do more than raise money: they raise awareness. Conversations during the workout reminded many members that early detection depends on access to screening and timely follow-up. When insurance criteria leave gaps, community-driven programs and local clinics can help bridge them. If you or someone you know faces barriers to preventive care, seek out local resources—many nonprofit organizations and fitness communities host similar fundraisers to help cover the cost of screenings and diagnostics.

We’re grateful to everyone who showed up, donated, and spread the word. Fundraisers like this demonstrate how strong communities can be when they come together to support preventive care and help remove barriers to timely diagnosis. If you missed this event, stay tuned for future fundraisers—your participation can help ensure more people receive the screenings they need.
