Oi Gente!
I’m a big fan of passion fruit and love creating recipes that highlight its bright, tropical flavor. If you enjoy passion fruit, you’ll find many of my recipes use its tart-sweet profile to great effect.
I’ve spent many years in California and Texas and sampled countless excellent margaritas. Over time I developed my own favorite riff that pairs passion fruit with smoky mezcal for a balanced, exciting cocktail.
Why I love this recipe:
This cocktail brings two favorites together: fresh passion fruit and a margarita base. The smoky mezcal complements the tart-sweet passion fruit beautifully, and a Tajín rim adds a bright, spicy contrast that lifts the whole drink.

I experimented with the balance of lime, agave, tequila and mezcal to arrive at this version — it’s refreshing, slightly smoky, and perfect for warm days or any time you want a festive drink.
Saúde! xx

Ingredients and Tools

Note: passion fruit pulp (unsweetened) is also called passion fruit puree. You can make it from fresh fruit or buy it frozen where available.
- Unsweetened passion fruit puree (pulp) — about 1/2 cup for this recipe. Make from fresh passion fruit or use a high-quality frozen or canned pulp with no added sugar.
- Fresh lime juice — about 1/4 cup (2–3 limes, depending on size).
- Mezcal — adds a pleasant smoky note; it’s a key part of this version.
- Tequila (blanco) — the clear, unaged variety.
- Triple sec or orange liqueur — Cointreau or Grand Marnier are fine alternatives.
- Agave nectar — used as the sweetener; adjust to taste.
- Pinch of kosher salt — enhances and balances the flavors.
- Tajín — optional, for rimming the glass to add heat and tang.
- Ice — crushed or cubed, depending on preference.
You’ll also need basic tools: a citrus juicer, a mesh strainer if you prefer a smoother drink, a liquid measuring cup, a cocktail shaker or large mason jar, a pitcher if making a batch, and ice.
How to make Passion Fruit Margaritas

1. Prepare juices and puree. Juice the limes and extract the passion fruit pulp. If you make your own puree, strain if you prefer a smoother texture or leave the seeds for extra texture and visual appeal.
A note on juicing limes: Press gently when using a squeezer to avoid extracting bitter oils from the peel. You want the bright juice without excess bitterness.
2. Combine liquids. In a large mason jar or cocktail shaker, combine the passion fruit puree and lime juice. Add the tequila, mezcal, and triple sec.

3. Season and sweeten. Add a pinch of salt and the agave nectar (start with 2 tablespoons and adjust to taste).
4. Shake with ice. Add a few ice cubes, seal the jar or shaker, and shake vigorously until chilled.
How to rim a glass with Tajín:

Slice a lime into quarters and gently rub a wedge around the rim of each glass. Pour Tajín onto a small plate and dip the moistened rim into the spice, turning until coated.
How to serve passion fruit margaritas:

Fill the rimmed glasses with ice (crushed is ideal). Strain or pour the shaken margarita into the glasses. Garnish with lime wheels, wedges, or a dehydrated lime for a pretty finish. Serve immediately.

Quick tips for the best homemade margaritas:
- Scale the recipe easily to serve a crowd—ratios multiply well.
- Use fresh passion fruit puree when possible for the best flavor.
- Be gentle when juicing limes to avoid bitter oils from the rind.
- You can prepare the margarita mix ahead and refrigerate for up to two weeks; add ice only when serving to avoid dilution.
